Scenic Charge
Imagination Stage seeks a Scenic Charge, mid-season replacement through 8/31 with the possibility of renewing for next season. The position is full time and will include some weekends, evenings, holidays and the annual ISI gala.
The Scenic Charge is responsible for the painting all Lerner Theatre productions and for maintaining the paint areas in both the onsite and offsite shop, so as to allow Studio Theatre designers to successfully paint their shows.
The Scenic Charge will also coordinate two Studio Theatre productions and will be responsible for the ISI Gala set/prop design and execution.
PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Make tests and provide samples for inspection by Lerner Theatre Designers and production team to verify success of proposed painting process.
- Determine paint cost for productions and, as necessary, project cost for forthcoming productions. Work with Technical Director and Production Manager to ensure that paint orders stay within budget.
- Create a painting schedule through consultation with the Production Manager and Technical Director.
- Maintain equipment and inventory of paints and other related supplies. Determine purchase needs and work with Production Manager to acquire necessary items.
- Assists with the construction of scenery and set pieces, in accordance with plans provided by designer, through carpentry, welding, rigging, work with plastics, fabrics and other set related materials as deemed necessary by the Technical Director.
For shows being designed by Scenic Charge:
- Attend all production meetings, design run and technical rehearsals.
- Complete technical drawings, model and color renderings.
- Work with technical director to ensure that the show comes in within budget.
- Serves as the scenic painter for the show once built.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- College degree preferred.
- Two to three years of professional experience as a scenic artist.
- Expertise in scenic painting.
- General knowledge of and ability to complete theatrical set construction through carpentry, rigging and welding.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to take and follow direction.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Understanding of the theatrical design process.
- Ability to lift, push or maneuver up to 50-70 lbs repeatedly either alone or with others.
- Ability to climb ladders and work in high places
